Principal Ann Rebgetz Christmas message.

St James College in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, marked the end of 2024 with a series of outstanding achievements and a heartfelt farewell from its principal, Ann Rebgetz. Reflecting on her six transformative years at the helm, Principal Rebgetz shared the school’s progress and welcomed incoming principal, Ms Andrée Rice, who is set to take the college to new heights.

“This year has been exceptional for St James,” Principal Rebgetz said in the video above. “We have expanded our facilities by acquiring a new building, ensuring that our offerings will continue to grow.

“Academically and in extracurricular activities, our achievements have been phenomenal.”

The school’s commitment to academic excellence was highlighted by the success of its vocational education programs. Most Year 12 graduates earned Certificates II or III, with some attaining up to five certifications. These accomplishments contributed to St James being named a state finalist in an industry Training Awards, underscoring its reputation as a leading education and training provider.

In sports, St James shone on national and state levels. The boys’ basketball team ranked 13th nationally and sixth in Queensland, while the school’s netball program continued its dominance, with the boys’ team remaining undefeated in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools competition for the third consecutive year. St James also celebrated successes in rugby league, soccer, and athletics, solidifying its status as a powerhouse for athletic development.

The arts were another standout area, with the school offering free instrumental music programs to all students and having a unique full-time expressive arts counsellor. Its cultural initiatives were recognised with the Spirit of Catholic Education Award and accolades from the Premier’s Queensland Reconciliation Awards and AfriQueensland Awards.

Ms Rebgetz credited the staff’s dedication to bridging educational equity gaps as a cornerstone of the school’s success.

“Our teachers and trainers are the best, working tirelessly to support students, many of whom arrive with gaps in their education,” Principal Rebgetz explained. “Bridging these gaps is crucial not only for our students’ futures but for the broader economy.”

As Principal Rebgetz transitions to new horizons, she leaves behind a legacy of growth and excellence.

“Thank you for being part of this journey – to those who know us and those who don’t yet, I wish you all a joyful Christmas and a wonderful new year,” she concluded.

Under the leadership of Ms Andrée Rice, the St James College community is set for new horizons.
