Why Join the EDUCATION Adventure (JtA)? EDUCATION IS LIBERATION: Education is the single most important adventure because education unlocks potential, creates life defining opportunities and, with education, the world becomes a better place. This is why JtA is so focused on the education space.

For the first time in its history, all principals of St Thomas More College (STMC), Sunnybank, have come together in a single video to reflect on the school’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Brisbane’s most sought-after coeducational Catholic secondary schools.

The video, released as part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebrations, features each principal recounting their unique chapter of leadership and sharing how their contributions helped shape the vibrant, faith-filled community STMC is today. It also unveils never-before-seen footage of the iconic relocation of the college chapel, offering a rare glimpse into a defining moment for the Sunnybank community.

From Humble Beginnings to a College of Choice

Founded in 1974 amidst the Brisbane floods, STMC made history as the first Brisbane Diocesan Education Office college to be led by a lay principal, Mr Jim Slingsby, supported by Father Barney O’Shea, Father Tom Hegarty, and a pioneering team of lay staff. At the time, doubts lingered about whether lay teachers could deliver a robust Catholic education, but their vision quickly earned the public support of Archbishop Rush.

With the motto “God’s Servant First” and a culture that championed family, scholarship, justice, and spirituality, the college forged a reputation for innovation. It was among the first to introduce a pastoral care program centred on life skills and Gospel values, and from the outset embraced a progressive culture, initially without uniforms or corporal punishment.

Community spirit was central to its growth, with parents and staff fundraising tirelessly to expand the original Turton Building. Over the years, leaders such as Chris Noonan and Peter Elmore spearheaded new facilities and technological upgrades, while more recently, Principal Les Conroy has overseen the completion of the college’s Master Plan, including the Chapel of St Thomas More, The Thomas More Café, and a reimagined campus entry.

A Living Legacy

Today, the college continues to flourish with a waitlist that reflects its reputation for excellence, and its tagline “Do More, Be More” inspiring students to embrace their potential in faith and learning.

The principals’ video stands as a powerful tribute to STMC’s journey and the enduring vision that has guided its first 50 years—ensuring the college remains, in every sense, God’s servant first.
