Shane and Toni Dicker.

The historic Spaniards Inn, with a history spanning 439 years, was the setting for Shane and Toni Dicker’s 45th wedding anniversary this past Sunday, marked by a traditional Sunday roast lunch.

On this particular Sunday, we all found ourselves indulging in yet another delectable UK Sunday roast, this time at the renowned Spaniards Inn. Steeped in history and charm, the inn’s age-old allure remained intact, offering a glimpse back in time. The roast was exquisite, and the sticky toffee pudding surpassed all expectations.

Originally erected in 1585 as a tollgate marking Finchley’s boundary, The Spaniards Inn has accumulated numerous anecdotes over the centuries. Its name pays homage to the Spanish Ambassador to James I of England, while local lore suggests it was the birthplace of the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin during his father’s tenure as landlord in the early 1700s.

With mentions in Dickens’ “The Pickwick Papers” and reputedly the haunt where Keats penned ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, The Spaniards exudes a romantic, timeless ambiance. Adorned with traditional wood panelling and period features, the Grade II listed building seamlessly blends historical charm with contemporary comforts. Its welcoming atmosphere and diverse clientele make it a quintessential British local.

Nestled on the fringes of Hampstead Heath, The Spaniards offers a tranquil escape just minutes away from the bustling heart of London. Its cozy corners and charming walled beer garden provide the perfect backdrop for leisurely afternoons or al-fresco dining, inviting patrons to unwind and savour the moment.

Following our hearty meal, we embarked on a leisurely stroll through the picturesque village of Hampstead, meandering along its labyrinthine streets and stumbling upon the quaint Holly Bush—a serendipitous addition to our itinerary. Later, we ventured to Farringdon, eager to experience another of Mr. Fogg’s establishments, this time immersing ourselves in the botanical wonders of the House of Botanicals while savouring their signature cocktails.
