How we finally solved UK mobile data (and why we went straight to EE)

On our first trip, we did what most people do when they’re jet-lagged and just need Google Maps right now: we walked into a physical Three store and grabbed a SIM. It worked… sort of. But coming from the Telstra experience back home, the coverage felt patchy and frustrating.

Next trip, we tried to be smarter. We organised a travel SIM through Simify before leaving Australia. The process was smooth, but once again, we found ourselves doing the same dance: pockets of weak signal, drop-outs, and that constant “why is this so hard?” feeling.
After a lot of searching, one name kept popping up in coverage conversations: EE.
Here’s what we noticed:
EE actually has a dedicated Travel eSIM for UK visitors product, and it’s designed to be purchased online and installed quickly — no shop visit required.
They also make the setup process straightforward with step-by-step help for iPhone and Android (the usual QR code / in-app installation flow).
This is the bit that matters if you’re comparing options on your phone at 2am the night before flying:
1) Price transparency (and less “tourist tax”)
EE’s PAYG options and add-ons are clearly published (including short-duration options like 1-day unlimited data), which makes it easier to match a plan to your trip style.
2) You’re actually on EE, not “EE-ish”
A lot of providers market “on the EE network”, but you’re still buying through an extra layer (sometimes with different inclusions/support/activation rules). Buying direct removes the mystery layer.
3) Coverage and performance reputation
Independent testing and UK regulator reporting regularly place EE strongly, particularly in overall reliability/availability and 4G/5G experience metrics.
If you want the simplest “land and go” setup:
And if you’re travelling as a couple/family, eSIM makes it even easier to keep everyone connected without the “who’s got the tiny SIM eject pin?” moment. Tethering to other devices and phones works perfectly.
If you’re following along with the JtA UK adventure series, this was one of those small wins that made everything else smoother: maps, trains, bookings, messages, the lot.
