Some adventures start slowly. This one started at 4am.

It was dark, it was early, and Brisbane had barely begun waking up when we were already on our way.

The reward? A smooth run to the airport, a smooth flight south and, by around 9am, Melbourne.

And with virtually the entire day still ahead of us, there was only one sensible thing to do:

Start exploring.

Melbourne on foot

There’s something about arriving in a city and simply getting amongst it.

Melbourne is made for that.

One minute you’re walking past beautiful old buildings and some of the city’s grand architecture; the next, you’ve disappeared down a graffiti-covered laneway where almost every wall has become a canvas.

We explored the streets, checked out the laneways, jumped aboard Melbourne’s trams and allowed the city to keep revealing something different around every corner.

Of course, an adventure also needs the occasional strategic refreshment stop.

An Irish pub made the list.

Then a tiki bar.

Because apparently that is what happens when you give us an entire day in Melbourne.

From daylight to city lights

As the daylight disappeared, Melbourne changed again.

We headed towards the Yarra and walked along the river with the city illuminated around us — towers, bridges, reflections and the unmistakable buzz of Melbourne at night.

After starting the day before sunrise in Brisbane, it was a pretty spectacular way to finish our first day south.

Dinner came with one final ingredient: the Lions game on the screens at a sports bar.

Brisbane had followed us to Melbourne after all.

The Day One scoreboard

20,133 steps.

14.05 kilometres on foot.

One flight.

Countless Melbourne streets and laneways.

A few very well-earned drinks.

And one very full first day.

Not bad for a day that started at 4am.

And this is only the beginning…

Brisbane to Melbourne isn’t simply about getting from one city to another.

It’s about what happens in between.

The places we find. The people we meet. The things we hadn’t planned for. The moments that turn into stories. And occasionally discovering just how far you can walk before your legs start questioning your life choices.

Day One: Melbourne.

Adventure officially underway.
