After two very big days exploring Melbourne, Day Three started a little differently.
Slower.
And our legs were probably quite grateful for it.
The first mission of the morning was an important one: replenish the coffee supply.
A little walk took care of that — and somehow also resulted in a GYG breakfast burrito for the journey back to the apartment.
A very reasonable start to a Sunday in Melbourne.
We then met up with Uncle Tim, swapped trams and walking for four wheels, and headed along the waterfront.
First stop: Brighton Beach.
It was another completely different side of Melbourne — away from the CBD laneways and city towers we’d spent the previous couple of days exploring.
That’s becoming one of the best things about this adventure.
Just when you think you’ve started to get a feel for Melbourne, the city presents something completely different.
From Brighton, we headed to Queen Victoria Market.
And then came the serious business of lunch.
Everyone disappeared in different directions in search of something from the enormous choice of food stalls.
The hardest part wasn’t finding something good.
It was deciding what not to eat.
Eventually we all returned with our selections.
Different choices.
Same result.
Everyone came back a winner.
After lunch, we wandered across to Melbourne Central.
Calling it a shopping centre almost seems inadequate. It sprawls across level after level, wrapped around some fascinating pieces of Melbourne itself.
And completely by chance, our timing was perfect.
A crowd was gathering beneath Melbourne Central’s famous clock, so naturally we joined them.
Then, on cue, the clock opened and the enormous mechanism above us came to life to the sound of Waltzing Matilda.
One of those unexpected little Melbourne moments that we hadn’t gone looking for — but were very glad we happened to find.
After three days of exploring, the afternoon and evening finished in perhaps the best possible way.
Back to Uncle Tim’s.
Nibbles.
A few drinks.
A great dinner.
And time simply enjoying being together.
Not every adventure needs to be about racing from one place to the next.
Sometimes the best part is slowing down long enough to enjoy where you are — and who you’re there with.
14,263 steps.
9.7 kilometres on foot.
One breakfast burrito.
Brighton Beach.
One enormous market.
An unexpected Melbourne Central performance.
And a great evening with family.
A quieter day?
Maybe.
But at nearly ten kilometres on foot, apparently we’re using the term “easier day” fairly loosely.
Three days in, and Melbourne keeps giving us something different.
Big city streets. Hidden laneways. Markets. Beaches. Food. Family. Unexpected discoveries.
And plenty more kilometres than any of us probably planned on walking.
Day Three complete.
The adventure rolls on.
