We made a beeline for St Michael’s Mount and, with luck well and truly on our side, arrived right on low tide — which meant we could walk across the ancient causeway to the island. As if that wasn’t good enough, fortune struck again when we managed to score the last three pasties available. We’d been talking about them for the past three years, and somehow they were every bit as incredible as we remembered. With full bellies and very happy hearts, we made the walk back across to the mainland and hit the road again.
Next on the list were Mousehole and Penzance, reached via some truly hair-raising roads that felt barely wide enough for one car, let alone two, despite somehow carrying a 60mph speed limit. Still, when the GPS says go, you go. Miraculously, we emerged unscathed, car intact, and continued on to St Ives — a place that completely stole the show. We’d expected another quaint little coastal village, but St Ives felt far grander; less sleepy seaside hamlet, more vibrant coastal city, bursting with life, beauty and that unmistakable Cornish charm.
After a huge day packed with scenic drives, unforgettable stops and plenty of road trip stories, we returned to Polperro and made the trek back down into the village for dinner at a pub almost literally on our doorstep — around 10 feet from the front door. A pretty perfect way to finish an epic day.
