Day 26 was all about one mission: find a squirrel.
With St Dunstan in the East on our radar — the hauntingly beautiful ruins of a church destroyed during World War II and now transformed into a public garden — we figured it was our best chance. Sure enough, within moments of arriving, there it was. Mission accomplished.
From there, we wandered a couple of minutes down the road to take in the iconic sights of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge before hopping aboard a ferry and cruising along the river to Greenwich.
Our first stop was the spectacular Trafalgar Tavern, perched right on the River Thames and every bit as impressive inside as you’d hope. After soaking up the riverside charm, we explored Greenwich and found ourselves at another historic gem, The Plume of Feathers.
The adventure continued by bus as we made our way to The Mayflower — an incredibly atmospheric pub on the Thames dating back to 1552 and said to be the oldest pub on the river. We attempted to brave a seat out on the timber deck, but the wide gaps between the planks were enough to send us back inside for a more relaxing experience.
On the way back to the train, we passed the site where the world’s first underwater tunnel was begun in 1825 — and as if the day needed one more highlight, we spotted another squirrel. A win on every level.
