Day 17 took us on an unforgettable adventure to Aberdeen. I’ve always wondered what Grandma’s hometown was like, so it was really special to finally explore the city and its stunning coastline for ourselves. Aberdeen’s famous grey granite buildings may not bring a lot of colour, but they give the city a character and beauty all of their own.

The coastal drive was an absolute highlight. Being able to travel right along the waterfront, taking in the massive ships, twin lighthouses and sweeping ocean views, made for a brilliant day out. But the real showstopper was spotting a huge pod of dolphins, calves included, putting on an incredible display in the water. It was one of those moments you don’t forget.

We also stopped to visit Dunnottar Castle, which was especially meaningful given Andrew’s family ties to it. Seeing those breathtaking ruins perched dramatically on the cliffs above the sea was something special. It is easy to understand why the location has featured in films and television — it feels both powerful and timeless.

On the drive back from Aberdeen, we stumbled across Lindores Abbey Distillery and, naturally, had to stop in. You simply can’t come to Scotland and not visit a whisky distillery. It was a fantastic spot, with the modern distillery beautifully weaving in the rich history of the site.

A brilliant day of family connections, coastal beauty, castles, dolphins and whisky — Scotland continues to deliver.
