Day 13 was one we will never forget. Saying goodbye to Bourton-on-the-Water was genuinely hard. It had felt like stepping into a postcard, and leaving such a beautiful place behind was surprisingly emotional. But while the farewell was sad, the day quickly turned into one of the wildest adventures of the trip. Google Maps seemed determined to keep us as far away from any sensible main road as possible, instead sending us down a maze of back lanes, narrow winding roads and tiny stretches where giving way to oncoming traffic became part of the experience. It felt less like a drive and more like a scenic challenge.
Along the way, we made a detour to one of our all-time favourite towns, Castleton, which still ranks incredibly high on our beautiful town list. It had been home for five nights on our previous road trip, so there was no way we were passing through without returning to Ye Olde Nags Head for the iconic meal we’d been dreaming about — the glorious “choose your own combo” of sausages, mash and gravy. Somehow, it was even better than we remembered. After a quick wander around town to relive memories from our last visit, we piled back into the car and continued on, tackling roads that can only be described as goat tracks rather than 60mph routes, before finally arriving in Haworth — the atmospheric hometown of the Brontë sisters.
